STUDIO SYSTEM Printer Unlike laser-based systems that selectively melt metal powder, the printer extrudes bound metal rods—similar to how an FDM printer works. This eliminates the safety requirements often associated with metal 3D printing while enabling new features like the use of closed-cell infill for lightweight strength. Next Step STUDIO SYSTEM Debinder The debinder prepares green parts for sintering by dissolving primary binder. With a low emission design, it requires no external ventilation and is safe for an office environment. Automatic fluid distillation and recycling means there is no need to refill between each cycle. THE PROCESS PRINTING The Studio System uses a printing process called Bound Metal Deposition (BMD). BMD is an extrusion-based metal additive manufacturing process where metal components are constructed by extrusion. Bound metal rods—metal powder held together by wax and polymer binder—are heated and extruded onto the build plate, shaping a part layer-by-layer. Once printed, the binder is removed via the debind process, and then sintered—causing the metal particles to densify. THE PROCESS DEBINDING When the part is printed, it is a mix of metal powder and wax and polymer binders. Proper removal of binder is critical to achieving parts with good metallurgy. The Studio debinder immerses the printed part in debind fluid to remove wax binder. This creates an open pore structure so that the remaining binder can escape when heated in the furnace. THE PROCESS SINTERING In the thermal debind step, the part is heated, and the polymer binder burns out between 200° to 600°C. In the sintering step, temperatures increase to just below the metal’s melting point causing the metal particles to fuse together and the part to densify.
